In the story "Dead end" Maria has to make difficult choices affecting her freedom to be a normal teen, due to her mothers death.Maria is left with the responsibility of helping raise and care after her younger sister and brother.Maria is just a senior student in high school, but she has no time to "hang out" with friends, or become "cool" like the gang of popular girls she knows whom dress sexy,and go out to be wild and do crazy teen age things with their boyfriends.Maria is different in all senses than those typically around her whom have freedom and smoked, partied.Maria had to make a choice whether she would keep her mothers promise to always stay in school and worry about getting the best education possible.It was Marias promise to her mother and she strongly felt she had to keep it,because it allowed her mother to die peacefully with a smile on her face.

Maria has a strong crush on a boy named Frankie,whom seems to be interested in her.Frankie is the "coolest" guy around, that everyone respects and every girl likes.This makes Maria feel even lonelier,and it hurts her that the "crew" invites her out one night to cruise with them in their car, and hangout with Frankie whom was the only one alone,and Maria has to refuse the offer.Maria feels empathy towards Frankie because he lost his girlfriend in a car accident and she feels his "loneliness" perhaps because of her own. Envy is important in this story because Maria envy's the girls who get to hangout and do popular things, while Maria has no school social life, and isn't popular.One day Frankie passes by Marias house early afternoon and Maria decides to go with him.Frankie takes Maria to the bridge,and kisses her.Maria feels so excited but as Frankie begins to touch her body Maria stops him.
